What Is an N244 Emergency Hearing?
An N244 application can be used to request an emergency court hearing when you are facing eviction. The hearing gives a judge the opportunity to decide whether the eviction should be suspended or delayed.
Emergency hearings may be requested in urgent situations, including where an eviction date has already been set or a possession order is in place.
If your circumstances have changed since the original hearing, that may also form part of the information put before the court.

When Can You Request an Emergency Hearing?
An emergency hearing may be requested where there is a clear and immediate risk, such as an approaching eviction date or bailiff action. The court will consider the circumstances of the application and the evidence provided.
Examples include:
- an eviction date scheduled within days
- bailiffs already instructed
- being unaware of the original hearing
- a realistic plan to clear arrears
- a change in income or circumstances affecting your ability to pay

This means you may have limited time to prepare for the hearing once the application has been accepted and listed by the court.

What Happens After You Submit an Urgent N244 Application?
If the court treats the application as urgent, a hearing may be listed quickly and you may be given short notice to attend.
Submitting the N244 application does not itself stop the eviction. The judge will decide at the hearing whether the eviction should be suspended.
At the hearing, the judge may:
- suspend the eviction
- adjourn the case
- dismiss the application
If the application is unsuccessful, your options may become more limited.

Can an Emergency Hearing Stop Eviction?
